English Oak, Pine or Beech – What We

Recommend and Why

Recommend and Why

When it comes to crafting furniture, doors, flooring or outdoor structures, choosing the right type of timber
is essential. At IH Carpentry, we often work with three popular options – English oak, pine, and beech –
each offering unique advantages. Here’s what we recommend depending on the project and why.

English Oak – strength, character, and longevity
Oak is one of the most prestigious hardwoods available in the UK. It’s incredibly durable, resistant to
moisture and insects, and has a striking grain pattern.

Best suited for:
high-end furniture
outdoor structures (decking, garden rooms)
heavy-duty doors and frames
long-lasting hardwood flooringWe recommend oak when clients are looking for a premium, long-term investment. While it comes at a
higher cost, its durability and aesthetic value more than justify the price.

Pine – affordable and easy to work with
Pine is a softwood that is easier to cut, shape and finish. It has a light tone with a uniform grain, making it
ideal for simpler, cost-effective interior projects.
Best suited for:
interior furniture and panelling
framing not exposed to the elements
painted or stained woodwork
We recommend pine for clients on a budget who still want reliable, clean-looking timber for indoor use.
With proper treatment, pine can last for many years.

Beech – solid and refined for interior use
Beech is a dense hardwood with a smooth, light finish. It has excellent strength and wear resistance but
is more sensitive to moisture, which limits its use to interiors.
Best suited for:
staircases and balustrades
bedroom and living room furniture
dry-area flooring

We recommend beech for projects that require strength and a refined, stylish appearance inside the
home.
Our advice
Choose English oak for durability and elegance, pine for affordable versatility, and beech for a polished
interior finish.
At IH Carpentry, we always tailor our timber choices to suit your project’s purpose, budget, and design
vision – because every great result starts with the right material.
